Description

The Box Moor Trust manages agricultural and amenity land on behalf people living within the old Hemel Hempstead Borough and the parish of Bovingdon. The estate comprises a variety of different environments, including watermeadows, chalk downland, woods, pastures, chalk streams, old clay workings and recreational land. The majority of the Trust land is open access, with just over a quarter of it being common land.

Activity description:

Outdoor activities for children and schools with a Forest School offering day visits for local school groups to engage in non-classroom based nature projects, such as pond-dipping, studying insects etc.
Conservation work is an important part of volunteering at Boxmoor with opportunities to help manage the land and river.
All activities are organised on an adhoc basis, and are weather-dependent. Dates would need to be checked in advance.
All activities where children are present will require the volunteer to have a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service). This is designed to prevent unsuitable people from working with children and vulnerable adults.

Logistic conditions:
Accomodation will be located by the local coordinator throug ABODEBED Serviced Apartments & Luxury Flats to Rent in Hemel Hempstead. One bedroom apartments have a onesize bed, bathroom with bath and shower, fully equipped kitchen with integrated appliances (fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, oven/hob and microwave), spacious lounge/diner with TV/DVD/Sky+ and double sofabed. Complimentary onsite parking with lift access from all car parking levels. All apartments include 'usual' amenities such as hairdryers and irons. DThe land owned by the Trust is spread across 500 acres on the outskirts of Hemel Hempstead. The volunteer would need to take a bus (the 500 which runs between Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted) to the Trust headquarters where the activities are based. However both the educational work and the conservation work can take place over a large area within the Trust’s 500 acres so the volunteer would need to be fit and able-bodied. As some conservation work might take place during inclement weather, the volunteer would need suitable clothing and sturdy footwear or boots.
Profile requested:

The volunteering suits those interested in children and learning or those who are active and interested in practical conservation and environmental work.
